Extension of the Promenade du Paillon

15 July 2022

Urban forest, natural pond and more than 1500 trees will be part of the extension of the Promenade du Paillon.
A project that has been debated for some time among the people of Nice. But it will allow to have a real vegetation in the middle of the city, the suppression of 1740 tons of CEO2 per year, the reduction of the urban noise by 6 to 8 decibels and the reduction of the temperature by 2 to 3 degrees in summer season.

The architects João Luís Carrilho de Graça and Alexandre Chemetoff were chosen to carry out this extension project. These architects decided to take their inspiration from the gardens of the Cimiez Arena and the Castle Hill. A waterway will crisscross the park along its entire length and a rainwater recovery system will be put in place to feed the park and all its plants. Their objectives are: to have a very dense park to give the illusion of an urban forest where picnic, walk, play sports and discover certain animal species. Several small streets around Acropolis will also be removed to reduce pollution.

A very interesting project for the city's urbanism. For several years now, French cities have chosen to bring back the forest to their cities. An inspiration that comes straight from the United States and more precisely from Central Park in New York. But it's not just for the sake of it, following the global warming, the new challenge is to refresh the cities. For this, a dense plantation with varied species is needed. The work is scheduled to be completed by 2025.

As for the MAMAC, it plans to host more exhibitions with over 400M2 of additional space. The library will be renovated and the underground car parks will be preserved. On the other hand, Acropolis and the TNN will be removed from the map between 2022 and 2023. Instead, there will be the Palace of Arts and Culture. This will mark the end of the Promenade du Paillon. We will have to wait until 2026 to discover this new place.
